  • Ozeri Presents the Benefits of Digital Bath Scales

A leading manufacturer of digital lifestyle products, the Ozeri supplies bathroom scales and other devices to consumers and upscale vacation resorts around the globe. The Ozeri's high-tech products have many unique, useful features; its scales, for example, feature bioelectric impedance analysis technology.

A widely used means of assessing body composition, bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) measures the amount of body fat a person has in relation to lean body mass. This is an important measure of overall health, since excessive body fat greatly heightens an individual's risk for diabetes and heart disease. By measuring BIA, individuals can better understand their personal body composition and work to mitigate any risks.

The newly updated Ozeri Touch 440 lbs Total Body Scale, for instance, combines advanced algorithms with BIA, incorporating a person's age, height, gender and weight to accurately calculate body fat, hydration, muscle mass and bone measurements for adults and infants. Since muscles, blood vessels and bones have a relatively higher water content than fat tissue, they conduct electricity more easily. Body fat, however, displays less electrical conductivity. The Ozeri Scale is able to determine the amount of fat tissue by sending a weak and harmless electrical current through your body. This small electrical current is imperceptible to the user, and returns back data that is used to instantly calculate the advanced measurements.

For individuals aiming to lose weight, BIA can provide important insights on whether they are losing fat, even if their body weight does not change. Conversely, BIA also provides perspective to those who seek to add muscle mass. People can learn more about their true progress toward their health and fitness goals from BIA than they can from traditional weight monitoring.

About Ozeri - Ozeri began as a leading supplier of professionally designed and crafted housewares for the fully furnished vacation property market and is today an emerging brand in the consumer market with products available at select retailers and online.

  • Ozeri Pedometers and Activity Trackers

After establishing itself as a leading source of digital lifestyle products for vacation residences in the destination club industry, Ozeri began to offer its products to the consumer marketplace. Due to its unique business model, Ozeri is able to provide in-demand products, such as pedometers (also known as activity trackers), to consumers at affordable prices. According to academic research, using a pedometer can motivate individuals to increase activity and improve health.

To assess the effects of regular pedometer use on health, two researchers reviewed English-language articles and studies from medical and scientific sources. This review identified 26 qualifying studies, including 18 observational studies and 8 randomized control trials (RCTs) with a total of 2,767 study participants. In the RCTs, researchers noted that participants who used pedometers increased daily steps by nearly 2,500 steps per day over control participants. Moreover, participants in the observational studies increased step count by more than 2,000 steps each day over baseline levels.

After assessing data across all the studies, researchers validated that pedometer users decreased body mass index and blood pressure. These results indicate that pedometer use can lead to significant positive health improvements. However, additional research is necessary to validate whether improvements sustain over the long term.

Unlike some fitness trackers that must be worn on a belt, Ozeri produces a line of 3D, triple-axis activity trackers that can be carried in a purse or a pocket, yielding exceptionally accurate data for distance or steps walked, stairs climbed, calories burned, and time spent exercising. Tracking metrics, exercise, and diet on a daily basis provides a graphical view of progress; they can also help users adjust fitness plans according to individual needs and goals. Additionally, fitness trackers can improve accountability by letting users share personal progress with friends; friendly competition can boost motivation, while peer support fosters teamwork.

  • What You Need to Know About Your Blood Pressure

At some point we’ve all had our blood pressure checked. A nurse has asked us to hold out our arm, then wrapped a deflated cuff around it, and slowly pumped air into it until it was uncomfortably tight. While this process only takes a minute, the results of blood pressure screenings are vital to our health.

That’s because there are usually no visible symptoms of high blood pressure, a serious condition that affects 67 million American adults. It’s important to know what exactly blood pressure is and why tracking it on a daily basis can keep you healthier.

    1. What is it? The definition of blood pressure is simple. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines it as the force of blood against our artery walls as it moves through the body’s circulatory system.
    2. How is it measured? Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury or mm Hg. When you get your blood pressure checked the nurse will give you two numbers. The first number is the systolic pressure. It measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts or beats. The second number is the diastolic pressure and measures the pressure in the arteries between beats. The systolic pressure is normally greater than the diastolic pressure. Your BP will be given to you as systolic pressure “over” diastolic pressure.
    3. What’s a normal BP? The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says normal BP occurs when systolic pressure is less than 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure is less than 80 mmHg. However, as you’ll read below, there’s danger in blood pressure that’s too low.
    4. The highs and lows of BP. When your blood pressure isn’t measured at normal levels it’s described as high or low. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a serious medical condition. It occurs when systolic and diastolic pressures are consistently around 140/90 mmHg or higher. The CDC reports that high blood pressure significantly raises the chances for heart disease and stroke which are the first and third leading causes of death in America. Low blood pressure, or hypotension, occurs when blood pressure levels are at or below 90/60 mmHg. While low blood pressure doesn’t seem as severe, it can cause heart disorders, fainting, and neurological disorders.
    5. Why is it important to track? As stated previously, it’s important to track because there are few warning signs for high and low blood pressure. If you’ve been diagnosed with either hypertension or hypotension tracking your BP daily is a painless way to stay on top of your health.

Consider investing in an at-home blood pressure monitor, like the state-of-the-art monitors from Ozeri. They’re not only trusted by individuals, but by doctors and hospitals worldwide. Ozeri’s blood pressure monitors get to know your body’s patterns by storing over 1,000 readings. For instance, the BP2M and BP4M monitors provide instant guidance on the numbers, using a color-coded system of green/orange/red for normal / pre / hypertension.] The Ozeri CardioTech BP3T model averages the previous three readings to give you a more accurate picture of your health. This sophisticated model lets you know when your blood pressure is too high and will give you a visual warning signal. With Ozeri, you don’t have to wait to go to the doctor in order to check your blood pressure.

    6. What can you do to keep BP levels healthy? Thankfully, there are things you can do to help keep your blood pressure at normal levels. The CDC recommends:

      - Staying physically active

      - Reducing the amount of salt in your die

      - Maintaining a healthy body weight

      - Keeping a healthy diet

      - Not smoking

  • It’s More Than a Number: How Ozeri Bathroom Scales Make You Smarter About Your Weight

Most of us wouldn’t consider climbing onto the bathroom scale a fun activity. However, it’s an essential daily step in staying on top of our health. That’s because those (dreaded) 3 digits that pop up are more than just a number. They help us determine other health factors such as our body fat percentage, body mass index and lean body mass. These three factors, plus our weight, give us a clearer picture of our overall health and can help determine the risk for certain diseases. Now, Ozeri’s award-winning bathroom scales are making it easier than ever to keep track of your health from the comfort of your home!

    1. Weight or total body weight is the first measurement that comes to mind when thinking about stepping on a scale. Keeping a healthy weight is important to overall health because the National Institutes of Health says it lowers the risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other serious conditions. Ozeri’s WeightMaster scale makes it simpler to track your weight with Color Alert Technology. The scale illuminates your weight change in green if you’ve lost weight and in red if you’ve gained weight. The WeightMaster also records previous weigh-ins, giving you a clearer picture of your weight change over time. This feature is a huge help if you’ve set a weight goal you’re trying to reach!
    2. Body Mass Index or BMI is a measure of body fat based on your height and weight. Ozeri’s WeightMaster scale uses special auto recognition technology that determines your BMI along with your weight—no math required on your part. Knowing your BMI is essential to your overall health because according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can help point to possible medical risks in adults. The CDC defines a normal BMI as anywhere from 18.5-24.9 in adults who are 20 years or older. Those with a BMI 30 and over are considered obese. As most of you know, obesity is a serious medical condition that can lead to numerous health problems.
    3. Body Fat Percentage is an alternative to BMI for determining how much fat is in your body. Some medical researchers believe body fat percentage is a more accurate way to measure body fat and determine if you’re at risk of disease. Ozeri’s multi-functional bathroom scales are equipped with Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis technology which measures the opposition to the flow of electric current through your body. Body fat is not very conductive, so it will obstruct the flow of electrical currents, while muscle is highly conductive.
    4. Lean Body Mass is a measure of everything else inside your body (muscle, bone tissue, organs, water, etc) except the fat. Fitness experts say knowing your LBM is helpful during weight loss to make sure you’re losing fat, not muscle. Ozeri weight tracking scales give you the numbers you need to figure out your LBM. Fitness experts recommend using this formula: Body Weight - (Body Weight x Body Fat Percentage) = LBM.
  • 6 Tips for Staving Off Cardiovascular Disease

When it comes to cardiovascular disease, the numbers are simply terrifying. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death throughout the world, killing over 17 million people in 2008. With over half of the adult population in the U.S. either overweight or obese, the number of deaths caused by cardiovascular disease is bound to skyrocket in the years to come.

However, cardiovascular disease is caused by a range of factors, not just obesity. High blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, and smoking can contribute to cardiovascular disease. Compound these factors with the busy lifestyle of today, and you have a recipe for poor cardiovascular health.

Ultimately, the ability to dodge cardiovascular disease is within all of us. While many of the things we can do to have a healthy heart are easy, some strategies will require serious lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking. To help you avoid becoming a statistic, we’ve listed some important things you can do to improve your cardiovascular health.

    1. Eat whole grains. Numerous studies have highlighted the health benefits of incorporating whole grains into your diet. Foods such as whole wheat pasta, brown rice, millet, and barley do wonders for reducing the risk of heart disease and maintaining healthy blood pressure, while oatmeal is nothing short of a cholesterol-absorbing sponge. Doctors recommend eating at least a cup a day of oatmeal, or 3-5 servings of whole grains total throughout the day to help keep cardiovascular disease at bay.

    2. Avoid fried and processed foods. Yeah, you know the big culprits here. Donuts, fries, pizza, burgers, stir fry dishes- basically a lot of delicious stuff. When preparing meals, look to bake foods rather than fry, and go for whole grains and low-fat dairy for breakfast and lunch.

When eating out, use common sense. The made-to-order burrito with rice, grilled chicken and fresh vegetables is much better for you than the greasy burger and fries you’ll get in a drive-thru. Fortunately, many restaurants now offer whole grain options, including brown rice and whole wheat pasta, so be sure to ask your server if such options are available.

    3. Exercise every day. Diet is a big part of reducing the risk of heart disease, but you’ll maximize the health benefits of a good diet by exercising regularly. Aerobic activities, like running and walking will help keep your metabolism humming, so that you can keep your heart strong and the pounds at bay. Aim to exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Remember, your heart is a muscle, and the more often you engage in moderate-intensity exercise, the stronger your heart will be. If you’re new to exercising, be sure to see a doctor and find out what type of exercise is best for you.

    4. Limit caffeine and sugar consumption. While recent studies have highlighted some of the benefits of coffee, excessive caffeine consumption can result in tachycardia, a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat too fast. Arrhythmias are the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest, as a severe arrhythmia can prevent the heart from pumping blood through the body and ultimately lead to death.

    5. Cut down on tobacco and alcohol. If possible, you should cut out tobacco and alcohol entirely. Heavy alcohol consumption can actually cause the heart muscle to deteriorate over time, while smoking is one of the leading causes of heart-related deaths.

    6. Check your blood pressure regularly. Your blood pressure is a pretty good indicator of your cardiovascular health. Generally speaking, a healthy blood pressure is less than 120/80, so be sure to check your blood pressure often.

In between doctor’s visits, you can check your blood pressure regularly with a home blood pressure monitor such as the Ozeri BP2M or BP4M. The Ozeri BP2M CardioTech is a portable wrist-style monitor, great for those who travel often or are constantly on the go. Able to store up to 80 readings with the date and time, the BP2M uses an easy-to-read, color-coded system to accurately display your blood pressure reading. It even has an arrhythmia detector feature that can indicate if your heart beat is slower or faster than normal. For those who prefer arm-style blood pressure monitors, the Ozeri BP4M CardioTech has all the same features as the BP2M, but is designed with a cuff large enough to fit around the upper arm.

  • So You’re Thinking of Buying a Pedometer?

When you consider the nature of a desk job and our widespread dependency on motor vehicles to get around, it’s no wonder so many of us live a somewhat sedentary lifestyle. Our non-stop, production-driven society offers little time for quality exercise, forcing us to make ourselves miserable with the latest carb-free diet we read about in some second-rate magazine while standing at the checkout lane.

Now don’t get me wrong, a balanced diet is definitely important, but exercising everyday promotes a healthy mind, body, and spirit. In fact, simply walking a few miles a day can help you shed calories and stay in good spirits all day long. With a quality pedometer, you can track your daily steps and incorporate some easy fitness into even the busiest day. We’ll break down exactly how they work and give you some tips on how to use a pedometer to stay fit and motivated.

    What exactly is a pedometer?

Simply put, a pedometer is a small electronic device you wear on your waist that measures the number of steps you take. They all vary in size and functionality, but even the most basic pedometers are designed with some type of step counting program. However, not all pedometers are perfectly accurate.

On the other hand, more useful models like the Ozeri PD4X3 Pedometer will measure more than just steps. The Ozeri PD4X3 measure your steps as well as your speed, time, calories burned, and distance walked. It even has a “Chart to Progress” feature that graphically displays the percentage of your goal you’ve completed. For example, your pedometer may show that you’re 80% of the way to your goal—and for some, this is an easier way to view completion. Unlike many pedometers that need to remain in a vertical position to count steps, the Ozeri PD4X3 works in any position or angle to give you a precise step count no matter how you walk.

While some high-end pedometers have similar functions to the Ozeri PD4X3, none are nearly as affordable or portable. Its super slim, lightweight design eliminates the bulkiness you get with other pedometers, making the Ozeri PD4X3 practically weightless in a purse or backpack and a smooth fit in your pocket. With all of the controversy out there today about skin rashes and wearable pedometers, the sleek, durable casing of the PD4X3 won’t cause rashes or redness with prolonged contact to your skin.

    Walk the pounds away

According to the Harvard Health Letter, walking at a steady pace of 3mph for over two hours a day constitutes moderate-intensity exercise as recommended by doctors. Since 2,000 steps is considered a mile, many experts suggest up to 10,000 steps, or 5 miles of walking for healthy adults per day.

How to conquer your daily 10K

Making time to walk five miles a day can seem like a daunting task, but this is where the pedometer comes in handy. If you have a job that keeps you off of your feet all day, using your breaks to take a walk will help you quickly chip away at your daily 10,000 steps. If possible, leave the keys in the office, fire up the pedometer and walk to your favorite lunch spot. If you pack your lunch, walk to a nearby park and eat your lunch in the solitude of nature.

You can even start your day with a brisk walk and complete any remaining steps throughout the day. And after you’ve eaten dinner, take a walk around the block and put the finisher on your 10,000 steps. Aside from the usual health benefits of walking, numerous studies have shown that walking for as little as 15 minutes can even help aid digestion, so you don’t have to carry the weight of that delicious meal with you all night.

    Stay motivated

The jury is still out on the influence of pedometers on physical activity, but as noted in the aforementioned Harvard Health Letter, one study in 2007 showed that people who used pedometers walked 2,000 more steps each day than non-users.

10,000 steps can be a lot at first. If so, use a pedometer to gradually work your way up to it over a few weeks. Start with a goal of as many steps as you can comfortably tolerate, and aim to consistently increase your goal. 10,000 steps is only a minimum recommendation- the more you can walk each day, the healthier and happier you’ll be.
