  • Ozeri Introduces Non-Stick Ceramic Pans Free from Cancer-Linked Chemicals

The Ozeri, a manufacturer of luxury lifestyle items for home and health, has introduced a ceramic, nonstick frying pan available in 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch models. The Ozeri creates these items with no toxic chemicals, in keeping with its commitment to consumer health.

While easy to clean and maintain, many nonstick pans on the market today are made with a chemical known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a synthetic compound that releases toxic fumes when brought to very high temperatures. In their manufacturing process, certain brands also use perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a manmade chemical that has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals. The Environmental Protection Agency has advised manufacturers to avoid the use of PFOA, but no regulations are yet in place.

The Ozeri, however, leads the industry in producing ceramic cookware completely free of PTFE and PFOA. Users report that it is even easier to clean than traditional nonstick cookware, which in turn allows the cook to use less oil and prepare healthier meals. In addition, Ozeri's pans, with their environmentally friendly nonstick surface and die-cast aluminum construction, cook evenly and last longer than those pans that use chemical compounds.

  • Toxic Pans! How to Avoid Cooking With Carcinogens

With all the affordable Teflon coated cookware available these days, you’d be hard pressed to find a house that doesn’t have at least one non-stick pot or pan in the kitchen. And of course, no one wants to revert back to those old 20-pound cast iron pans our grandmothers used. However, several reports in the past decade have shown that cooking with non-stick cookware above 500°F releases harmful carcinogens, causing flu-like symptoms in humans and death among pet birds.

The long-term health effects caused by these carcinogens are still being studied, but it’s definitely a good idea to understand how your cookware can take a toll on your health in the meantime. To help you get a grasp on this issue, we’ve broken down the science behind the potential dangers posed by non-stick pots and pans, with a few tips on how to cook safely for you and your family.

So, What’s the Deal with PTFE?

In order to prevent food from sticking to the pan without using a ton of cooking oil, non-stick pans are coated with Teflon, otherwise known as the chemical polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE. The solid form of this chemical begins to break down when heated over 500°F, releasing an invisible, toxic substance into the air known as Perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. For those who use Teflon cookware, this means that non-stick pots and pans are 100% safe when used over low to medium heat.

    The Dangers of Pre-Heating Cookware

Non-stick cookware heats up much faster when empty, so never preheat your pots or pans before cooking. If you intend to sear a piece of meat, you can always use a stainless-steel or cast-iron pan, or your grill.

In light of these studies on non-stick cookware, many companies are designing safe alternatives to traditional non-stick cookware. Ozeri offers ceramic, non-stick pans that are 100% PTFE and PFOA-free, so you can cook on high heat without having to worry about harmful toxins leaching into your home or the environment. Ozeri’s entire line of Green Ceramic cookware is made with an eco-friendly ceramic coating that’s twice as scratch-resistant as other non-stick pans. Designed for incredible durability and safety, Ozeri’s unique ceramic coating provides a superior non-stick cooking surface, making cooking and cleaning a piece of cake.

    Ventilate

No matter how much heat you use when cooking, it’s always a good idea to make sure your cooking space is well ventilated, especially in the heat of summer and the dead of winter when windows remain shut. Be sure to use the fan on the microwave to keep your cookware at a stable temperature, or open windows if you’re without a vent. If you’re not running central cooling or heating, run the vent and keep windows wide open for maximum ventilation.

Take it Easy on Your Cookware

While many non-stick pans have a tendency to chip, it’s always a good idea to steer clear of metal utensils when using non-stick pans. Instead, spring for BPA-free plastic and silicone utensils. Additionally, be sure to clean your non-stick pans with nonabrasive cleaners and sponges, as coarse green pads and steel wool easily scratches cookware coated with PTFE. Save the Brillo pads for your stainless soup pot.

The research is still a work in progress, but the findings thus far on non-stick cookware are tough to ignore. As always, when it comes to keeping your family safe, there’s no such thing as being “too careful.”
